At Colorado Dental Wellness Center, we understand that for many, the dental chair can trigger a “fight or flight” response. Our goal is to move your body back into a state of safety and ease.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a supportive tool we use to help regulate your nervous system, allowing your mind and body to remain calm while we provide the care you need.
While sedation doesn’t replace local numbing, it works in harmony with it. By minimizing the stress and cortisol spikes often associated with dental visits, sedation allows for a more efficient healing process and a significantly more comfortable experience.
We offer three levels of biocompatible support tailored to your unique needs:
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A gentle, breathable option that eases mild tension and wears off quickly.
- Oral Conscious Sedation: A prescribed sedative taken prior to your appointment for deeper relaxation throughout your visit.
- IV Sedation: A precise, controlled option for those with higher anxiety or those undergoing more comprehensive, integrated procedures.
Whether you have a sensitive gag reflex, difficulty sitting for long periods, or a history of dental trauma, we work with you to choose the right path to a peaceful, restorative visit.
What to Expect Before During and After Sedation
Before Your Visit
Before your sedation appointment, our team will carefully explain the process and answer all your questions so you feel confident and prepared. Depending on the type of sedation used—nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation—you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a specific number of hours beforehand.
If you are scheduled for oral or IV sedation, you will need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after your appointment, as these forms of sedation can take time to fully wear off.
We will also review your medical history, current medications, and any existing health conditions. This allows us to create the safest and most effective sedation plan tailored specifically to you.
During Your Visit
When you arrive we will bring you into a calm treatment room. You can ask questions at any time. Once the sedation begins you will start to feel relaxed and at ease. Our team stays with you and monitors your vital signs throughout the entire visit.
Most patients feel like the appointment goes by quickly. Many say it feels like only a few minutes even if the procedure was longer.
After Your Visit
Recovery depends on the type of sedation used. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes. Oral sedation and IV sedation may take several hours to fully pass. You may feel sleepy or unsteady. This is normal.
We will give you instructions for care at home along with our contact number if you have questions. A follow up visit may be recommended based on your treatment.
COMFORTABLE DENTISTRY AT Colorado Dental Wellness Center
If you are seeking a more comfortable dental experience, call our office to schedule an appointment. Our dentist will discuss your needs and determine how to ensure a stress-free treatment experience.
Here are the ways you can choose from, depending on your needs:
- Local Anesthetic: A local anesthetic is used to numb your mouth and prevent discomfort. We offer this for most of the procedures we perform.
- Laughing Gas: A gentle inhaled sedation method that puts you at ease when breathed through a small mask placed over the nose. We recommend laughing gas to help young children relax.
- Oral Sedation: A sedation method taken orally as a liquid or pill.
- Hypnosis: We offer clinical hypnosis as an alternative to sedation. Our dentist is an approved consultant with the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.
- IV Sedation: This method is administered by a dental anesthesiologist and is the deepest form of sedation we provide. You will feel drowsy but remain awake.
Dental work may not be your favorite past-time and that's okay!
Dr. Safavi is an approved consultant in clinical hypnosis for emotional management and a certified practitioner of The Emotion Code™, designed to help you take back your life and wellness. Anxiety around dental work can be conquered, and we love playing a part in that journey.
What is Sedation Dentistry
SEDATION DENTISTRY REFERS TO ANY DENTAL PROCEDURE THAT IS PERFORMED UNDER SEDATIVES AND/OR ANESTHESIA.
This will help you to feel comfortable and relaxed. While under sedation, you will remain awake and conscious, but the medication will assist you in feeling less anxious about your time in the dentist’s chair. We aim to help all of our patients feel safe and comfortable in our care.
IS SEDATION DENTISTRY SAFE?
Yes, our team takes every precaution to make your dental care experience completely comfortable and safe. Every member of our team is trained to administer the forms of sedation we offer. Be sure to discuss all questions and concerns with our doctor during your consultation.
DO YOU ACCEPT WALK-INS AND SAME-DAY APPOINTMENTS?
Yes, we do. Colorado Dental Wellness Center welcomes walk-in appointments and will do everything we can to see you as soon as possible. We also offer emergency appointments as scheduling permits for same-day treatment and relief. Visit or call our conveniently located Denver office for the care you need to smile with pride!
